Stannard’s Rock is a lighthouse built on a reef located in the middle of Lake Superior, around 24 miles from the nearest point of land. In the fur trade days, this shallow reef posed a problem to shipping routes that went between Sault St. Marie and Duluth. The lighthouse was constructed and first lit in 1883 and is still considered one of the top engineering feats in U.S. history. It became automated and unmanned in 1962. Today it hosts some of the best fishing in the Great Lakes, even producing some record breaking lake trout.
